Match Report

Sherborne were again forced to shuffle their pack with a host of unavailability’s due to suspensions and family commitments. Out were Jacobs,Cochran,Farthing and Hodges in came Mann,Hobbs,Rowe and Cunningham.
The match kicked off in glorious autumnal sunshine which seemed to suit the visitors who started brightly in what was a scrappy opening period, where both teams struggled to settle. Lady luck was to shine on Sherborne who perhaps have not had a great deal in the first quarter of the season in the 12th minute, a long hopeful punt forward looked like a comfortable gathering for the Winterbourne goalkeeper Seb Gribble however he totally misjudged the bonce and saw the ball fly over his head leaving the on rushing Elliot Mann with the simple task of controlling the ball and kicking it into an empty net much to Gribbles embarrassment.
Winterbourne responded almost immediately Jamie Beale being forced into a smart save at his near post and moments later Mario Matteus fired a shot narrowly over Beales crossbar.Winterbourne were forced into an early substitution when Cameron Brown pulled up with a leg injury having to be replaced by Kane Simpson, Simpson was straight into the game forcing Beale into another save.
Sherborne doubled their lead on 31 minutes and did it in fine style Burton picked the ball up midwat in his own half and fed the ball to Marc Caines who inturn played a great ball down the line to Mann, Mann kept his cool looked up and flashed a ball across the box where Cunningham was on hand to poke the ball past an exposed Gribble.Again Winterbourne responded quickly this time it was the turn of Rob Sivers to draw the best out of Beale in the Sherborne goal.
The second half started with Luke Winsper in on the action quickly setting up Caines who fed Cunningham who couldn’t direct his shot on target.Sherbornes Jamie Beale and Winterbournes Rob Sivers were enjoying their own personal battle in the game and time after time it was Beale who held the upper hand making some great saves. Darren Rowe came to Beales rescue in the 52nd minute deflecting a goal bound shot over his own crossbar.Substitue Kane Simpson had his fair share of efforts on goal but again Beale was on hand to keep him at bay.
Sherborne Manager looked to freshen things up on 74 minutes replacing Cian Cabel with Steve Friend.Sometime goalkeepers have those days when they seem invincible and Beale was having one of those days a goalmouth scramble in 82nd minutes summed this up when looking beaten the Sherborne stopped hung out a leg to send a goal bound effort wide of his goal, however the match referee Parsons intervened in the 85th minute to ruin the keepers day when he inexplicably awarded a penalty against Harry Montacute, whatever he saw he was the only one in the ground that saw it and the players on both sides were stunned into silence, not something that could be said for the home crowd who were enraged by the decision. Winterbourne skipper Jake Hodgson kept his cool to slot past Beale.
The home side picked themselves up well and as Winterbourne went in search of an equaliser broke away through Cunningham who sent in a cross for substitute Friend to fire into the far corner of Gribbles net. Winterbourne did score again at the death Kane Simpson sending a shot past Beale that just sneaked into the far post but it was too late and Sherborne had secured a vital three points in their push away from the drop zone.
NO the best of games seen at Raleigh Grove this season the result being more important than the performance, Winterbourne will be disappointed they didn’t take any points back to Gloucester, the naming of the Sherborne Town keeper Jamie Beale tells a story.
