Saturday 15 August 2015
FA Cup 2015/16
Sherborne Town 1st
2-0 (Home Win)
Sherborne welcomed New Milton Town to a sun bathed Raleigh Grove for this FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round in buoyant mood following Wednesday night’s win over Street. The home side welcomed back ace marksmen Marc Caines,Raith Plant being the unlucky man to be replaced from the starting line-up. Nick Jacobs was fit again and took a place on the bench.
The match kick off in front of a disappointing crowd of 65, in the early stages there was little for them to get excited about in what was a scrappy game as both sides never settled into any pattern of play. The first real chance came in the 13 minute when following a Bond free kick a strong Burton header was well saved by Tom Rees in the visitors goal. New Milton had a good chance moments later when Taylor Leonard was sent through, he did well to round Norris in the home goal only to push himself to wide and from a tight angle struck the post with his effort.
The start of the second half saw Sherborne change their formation from starting the game with three strikers they opted to return to their normal 4-4-2 formation, this seemed to suit the players much better as they started to gain the upper hand in the tie. Their dominance paid dividends in the 58th minute as Cunningham played a great ball through to Farthing who showed great composure to round Rees and slot the ball into the empty net.
Sherborne were looking much the better side at this stage as New Milton battled to get back into the game, a Sherborne corner found the head of Jonny Manley whose powerful header was hacked of the lines to Caines who could only fire well over the crossbar.
The 83rd minute was the magic moment of the game, Marc Caines found himself with the ball at his feet on the left hand side of the penalty area and proceeded to hit a thunderous strike into the top right hand corner of the net, a tremendous goal that bought applause from all in the ground.
As the gathered crowd were still talking about Caines wonder strike New Milton went up the other end of the pitch and nearly got themselves back into the game when a strike that looked goal bound was cleared off the line by Bond.
Full time and a 2-0 win to Sherborne, not the best of games but the FA Cup is all about the result. Sherborne reward in the next round is a trip to St Marys where they face their Dorset rivals Bridport, the tie will be played on the 29th August.
Man of the Match went to Marc Caines for providing the moment of magic that lit up the game.
