Match Report

Determination and class combined to return Sherborne Town Reserves to winning ways as they won by the odd goal in seven against Holt United.

Goals from Dwayne Forshaw, Stuart Sweatman, Sam Jarman and Sam Vine secured Sheborne’s third win of the season against the Bulls, reducing the gap between the two teams to just two points in the Magna Dorset Premier League.

A late Holt penalty made for a tense finale, but manager Jason Lock remained content with how his team bounced back from a 6-0 MDPL Cup drubbing at Weymouth Reserves.

He said: “The players owed both Mark Crabb and I a return to form after Saturday’s performance. We started really brightly, playing some good pass and move football.

“It made a big difference and I was generally very pleased with our game. We kept the pressure on all the time and did not allow Holt to settle. The whole demeanour of the team was different and better.”

Sherborne required just six minutes to break the deadlock at Raleigh Grove as Forshaw allowed Sweatman to round a pair of opponents before returning the ball to the sender to finish.

Forshaw could have made it a quick-fire double two minutes later, but sent the ball the wrong side of the post with just the keeper to beat.

However, Sweatman’s harrying of a defender forced a mistake on 14 minutes as he stole in to pinch an under-hit back pass and score.

Holt were allowed back into the game when captain-for-the-night Scott Vine misjudged a ball into the box. He was unable to gather the effort ahead of his defender and a visitor profited.

The stopper atoned for his error immediately after the break, making a string of impressive saves, including a one v one opportunity he pushed over the crossbar.

Sherborne relieved the defensive pressure by extending their lead with what Lock described as “one of the team goals of the season”.

Aden Wills found Callum Gundry who in turn picked out Sam Vine in the box. Instead of going for goal himself, the midfielder laid off the ball for Jarman to hit the top corner.

With 63 minutes on the clock the Holt keeper claimed a corner and booted up-field. As the ball bounced, Neil Budden could not keep up with his attacker, who beat Scott Vine with a looping effort despite failing to connect sweetly.

The hosts hit back by restoring their two-goal advantage when Sam Vine coolly beat the on-rushing keeper after being picked out by substitute Steve Burton’s quick free kick.

The game was still to take another twist as Nick Jacobs – gaining match time at Raleigh Grove on a dual registration deal with Zamaretto Southern League Weymouth – opted to bring a ball down instead of head clear.

However, the versatile utility man lost possession and hauled down his opponent as they accelerated into the box. Holt converted the subsequent penalty but were frustrated in their bid to find a late equaliser.
