Match Report

A threadbare Sherborne side travelled to the Lew Hill Memorial Ground to face an Odd Down side who were flying high in the League table sitting in third place. Sherborne were without the unavailable Bond and Ormrod and again manager Jamie Manley had to fill a place on the bench alongside the returning from injury Marc Caines and Matt Day.

Sherborne made a bright start in a game that was not going to be a great spectacle due to the high winds that were not suited to passing football, however a superb passing move in the first five minutes put that myth to bed as Pete Ireland made a great run down the wing and picked out Sam Farthing with a pass who quickly slipped the ball into Haydn Hodges, Hodges rifled a great shot that had Alex Nash on the home goal grasping at thin air as it crashed down off the crossbar onto the goal line and away from danger.

It took the home side 11 minutes before they registered a threat on Jamie Beales goal but the keeper was untroubled by Lee Brudsons header which sailed wide of the target. Steve Friend needed Physio Freds magic sponge on 18 minute after clashing with Stowell it was not going to be Friends day when he again needed treatment moments later but Freds was having the game of his life with the sponge and on he continued.

Of the two side it was the visitors who were creating the better opportunities,a quick free kick from the alert Farthing found Burton who couldn’t direct his header on target having found himself in space 12 yards out. The half finished with Odd Down on the ascendency Matt Cuningston had an effort comfortably saved by Beale and a long range shot from the dangerous Adnan Hiroli curled just wide.Odd Downs Joe Raynes then blotted his copy book by being booked for a blatant dive as he tumbled as he bore down on the Sherborne goal.

The second half started with Odd Down on the front foot Chris Foyle was getting into the game firstly setting up Raynes who scuffed his shot wide then going on a good run to set up Wych who could only fire his shot over Beales crossbar.

The beleaguered Friend finally bowed out of the game after being caught late he tumbled into the surrounding wall unfortunately Fred sponges was all out of potions and he had to be replaced by Matt Day. The game threatened to boil over with tempers rising and as so very often happens the referees calms it down by brandishing cards which he did in quick succession one to Haydn Hodges for offering him some advice and then Ash Scott who bought down Sherbornes Nick Jacobs.

The best chance of the second half came through a Joe Smeeton cross the Sam Jarman should have done better than to fire it over the cross bar when six yards out. Odd Downs Foyle and Hiroli were a constant threat, most things good coming from the menacing pair but again Beale was equal to the shooting boots of Hiroli.

Sherborne were indebted to Joe Smeeton who has come into some fine form as we reach the business end of the season when he made a great block as the ball flashed across the Sherborne box. And a final chance for Sherborne fell to Matty Day who found himself in space but instead of trying his luck he tried to tee up Caines on the far post only for his pass to be intercepted.

So a good point was won away from home against a decent Odd Down side in difficult conditions, neither keeper was called upon to often with the Haydn Hodges effort hitting the bar in the first five minutes the closest either side came.Mom Went to Joe Smeeton.
