Wednesday 11 September 2013
Toolstation Western League Premier Division 2013/14
Sherborne Town 1st
4-2 (Home Win)
Sherborne Town 4 Odd Down 2
Sherborne came into this game in confident mood following their recent FA Vase success over St. Austell but it was Odd Down who were to create the first chance in a game played on a greasy surface due to the persistent drizzle when their number 10 blazed a header over the bar.
Both sides then settled down and exchanged possession before some great work down the right wing from Sherborne produced a flashing ball across the box that after a bit of “to me-to you” produced a great strike from the busy Binding which flashed past the Odd Down keeper to put The Town 1 up in the 7th minute.
This stirred Odd Down into action and it wasn’t long before a poor tackle from Turner produced handbags from both sets of players leading to referee Cloak brandishing a yellow card at the afore mentioned Turner.
Both sides were enjoying some good possession in each other’s territory with the forwards looking particularly dangerous Binding having a good strike on the Odd Down goal before they retaliated with a strike of their own which Knibbs was please to watch fly past his near post.
Sherborne or more exactly the previously cautioned Turner then had a lucky escape when a poor decision from the referee to give a free kick against him earned him a stern talking to much to the dismay of the vocal Sherborne crowd.
Odd Down were now enjoying more possession although never really troubling Knibbs with their wasted shots and free kicks. Their luck changed however when a goal mouth scrabble ensued following a corner, Odd Down pounced to poke the ball home 1-1.There was just enough time for Sherborne to have one more chance before the half ended when Day missed a glorious opportunity seeing his shot slide past the outside of the post.
The second half started much the same as the first with chances exchanged at either end of the pitch but it was Odd Down who were to draw first blood when following some poor Sherborne defending they latched on to a loose ball and prodded it past a despairing Knibbs in the Sherborne goal 2-1 down.
Odd Down were clearly in the ascendency now and some neat one touch football saw them in on goal again but they wasted the chance which they were to rue only minutes later when the midfield maestro Burton used all his knowledge gained from the absent Caines to rise salmon like to head the ball home 2-2 72minutes played.

Sherborne now clearly had the upper hand causing panic in the Odd Down half whenever they came forward, the slow tiring Odd Down defence could not cope with the pace of Day, Binding and Barrett who were creating chances at will although being unable to take them until the 80th minute when a long ball out of defence fell to Day who ran through on goal, slipped Binding in who finished off the move with a powerful strike past the Odd Down keeper.
3-2 up with ten minutes to go you would have thought Sherborne would shut up shop but they were having none of it, beating their opponents into submission in the 87th minute following some superb football with Day and Barratt combining down the left wing led to a great cross from Barratt which was gratefully excepted by Plant to slide the ball into the net to secure his first goal for Sherborne 4-2 Sherborne and the supporters home happy.
